The Gilbert Gallery American Flyer S-Scale Passenger Cars |
American
Flyer passenger cars naturally fall into coherent sets based on their
common design. They were made in in the five distinct styles
shown below: - New Haven style - Pullman Heavyweight style - Streamliner style - Painted streamliner style - Frontiersman style |
New Haven style made by Gilbert from 1946-1957. |
Pullman Heavyweight style made by Gilbert from 1946-1958. Lionel introduced them into their American Flyer line in 2006. |
Streamliner style made by Gilbert from 1950-1962. Lionel introduced them into their American Flyer line in 1981. |
The painted streamliner style cars are similar to the streamliner style cars but the dominant colors are painted, not the familiar silver. Gilbert made five of these sets between 1953 and 1964 and Lionel made six more between 1981 and 1992. |
Frontiersman style made by Gilbert in 1959-1960. |
In addition, Gilbert made a number of train sets that had both New Haven style cars and cars of other styles. In the knuckle coupler era of the 900-Series cars, between 1953 and 1959, Gilbert made ten train sets that had both New Haven style cars and Pullman Heavyweights. When I get the next page built, you'll be able to click here to see a list and pictures of the trains from the link coupler era of the 600-Series cars, between 1946 and 1953, which matched up New Haven style cars with both Pullman Heavyweights and streamliners. |
